Trump is scheduled to visit the famous Sabarmati Ashram in Ahmedabad and take part in a 22-km-long roadshow with Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
US President Donald Trump’s maiden visit to India will take place on February 24-25. He will be accompanied by First Lady Melania Trump.
Sources say Prime Minister Narendra Modi will personally receive the couple when Air Force One touches down in Ahmedabad on Monday (February 24) after 17 hours of travel.
President Trump will arrive in India at around noon at the Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel International Airport in Ahmedabad. From the airport, the two leaders will hold a 22-kilometre roadshow, with people lined up in the streets of Ahmedabad to welcome the US President.
The roadshow will culminate at Motera Stadium, with a stopover at Sabarmati Ashram, also known as Gandhi Ashram where the leaders will spend about 15 minutes. US President Donald Trump will be gifted a spinning wheel, two books on the life and times of Mahatma Gandhi and a sketch of the portrait of the Father of the Nation during his visit to the Sabarmati Ashram.
Sources say that the President and the First Lady might try their hand on the spinning wheel (charkha) kept near ‘Hriday Kunj’, a cottage inside the ashram where Gandhiji and his wife Kasturba once lived.
At around 12:30 pm, the leaders will arrive at Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel Stadium, also known as Motera Stadium, which is the world’s largest cricket stadium. There the US President will speak at “Namaste Trump” event with close to 1.25 lakh people in attendance. This would be Trump’s big political activity in India to garner support from Indian Americans back home as he heads towards the presidential race in November.
There will also be cultural performances for the dignitaries. Bollywood celebrities are expected to attend the event. Donald Trump will be the first serving US-president to visit Gujarat.
Later, Prime Minister Modi will host lunch for the couple and the other dignitaries. The US President and the First Lady will then depart for Agra at 3:30 pm.
They are scheduled to arrive at the Taj Mahal around 5 pm. The entire area will be sanitised and cordoned-off for the public. After spending about 30 to 45 minutes touring the Taj, they will depart for Delhi.
On February 25, official engagements will begin with a ceremonial reception at the Rashtrapati Bhavan at 10 am.
The couple will be welcomed by Prime Minister Modi, President Ram Nath Kovind and his wife Savita Kovind. Trump will inspect the Guard of Honour, followed by the introduction to the Indian delegation.
At 10:45 am, President Trump and Melania will head to the Raj Ghat to pay their respects to Mahatma Gandhi, where they will lay a wreath at the memorial.
Shoes are not allowed in the premises, therefore, Trump is likely to walk in socks. He will sign the guestbook, as is customary and has been done by all visiting dignitaries.
At around 11:30 am, President Trump and the First Lady will arrive at Hyderabad House for official talks. After the initial photo-op, PM Modi and Trump will move to a room for restricted dialogue followed by an expanded delegation-level talk.
Meanwhile, First Lady Melania Trump will head to a Delhi government school to interact with children and see the education system in place in Delhi. There is no confirmation on who from the Aam Aadmi Party-led government will be present to receive and accompany the First Lady during her school tour.
At the Hyderabad House, the talks will end with a joint press statement by both the leaders. There is no confirmation of any possibility of a Q&A session during the meet.
The press statements would be followed by lunch.
At around 3 pm, the President and his delegation will move to the US Embassy for a CEO roundtable where President Trump will meet the top businesspersons of the country.
The interaction will focus on how best to increase economic cooperation between the two countries. The imbalance of trade between India and the US has been a matter of constant consternation for the US President. India and the US have also been trying to finalise a trade deal which might not materialise even during this visit.
The President and the First Lady will then meet the embassy staff and after the photo-op, they will move to Rashtrapati Bhavan for the state banquet hosted by President Kovind at 8 pm.
Soon after the state banquet, the entire delegation will leave for the airport and depart from New Delhi at around 10 pm.
