Website owners and bloggers around the globe unfortunately have no idea what they’re doing when it comes to Search Engine Optimization (SEO).
It’s an area where people will pay incredible amounts of money to be helped, when the sad fact is that SEO is a technique that can be learned by anyone and everyone.
Regardless of your current skill level, I have highlighted below three crucial SEO steps that will help you get the most out of your blog or website.
Make Sure All SEO Tags Are In Place
First and foremost, you will want to make sure that you have all of the proper SEO tags in place and optimized to their fullest potential. The main tags that you should focus on and which are most important are the Title Tags, Meta Descriptions, H1 Tags and Image ALT Tags. I recommend installing a plugin called Yoast which allows you to easily manage and update all of your Title Tags and Meta Descriptions. Now let’s dive in a bit deeper to give you a better understanding of all of this.
Title Tags– The Title Tags hold the most weight from an SEO perspective and should contain your most relevant keyword phrases, but without “keyword stuffing”. You want these to read naturally as they are the blue clickable text that is seen in the search engine results when someone performs a specific search query.
Try to keep each Title Tag for each page around the recommended threshold of 70 characters or less.
To keep it simple, you will want to write a unique Title Tag for each page, with the most important keyword phrases in place, that describes the page to the visitor in around 70 characters or less.
Meta Descriptions- The Meta Description is the snippet of text that is typically shown underneath the Title Tag in the search results, which briefly describes what the page is about to visitors.
It is recommended that a unique and compelling Meta Description is written for each page in around 155-160 characters or less to encourage user click-through for your blog or website.
H1 Tags– The H1 Tags also hold a significant amount of SEO weight and are generally the heading that is above the main body of text on each page.
Each H1 Tag should be optimized with the most important keywords in place while still making sure it reads naturally to visitors. Keep is simple, keep it natural and make sure it’s readable.
Image ALT Tags– The Image ALT Tags get overlooked way too often. Many bloggers and website owners do not even know these exist and therefore are missing out on a very important opportunity for additional optimization.
Each image should have an ALT tag in place which helps strengthen your overall on-site SEO even further. In some cases, this tag is visible if the visitor hovers over the image on the page.
Do not sleep on the Image ALT Tags, it will only help with your SEO efforts.
Content Is Truly King
If you do not have a sufficient amount of fresh and unique content on your website, then Google will have a hardtime seeing your site as an authority, and therefore give you lower rankings. The best ranking websites are the ones that are fleshed out with high-quality and engaging content. More importantly, the more consistent you are with your content generation, the better chance you have of ranking for various keywords in the search engines. Which brings me to my two next points.
Copy Optimization– What good is having content on your blog if it is not optimized with SEO best practices in mind?
The process of copy optimization means ensuring your website content has a healthy density of target keywords that you are trying to rank for. Again, do not overdue this process.
You want to strategically place your main keywords in every blog post you write, while still making it flow and read well. This gives the search engines something concrete to grab on to.
Internal linking– This goes hand in hand with copy optimization. For each blog post you write, make sure you try and add at least one internal link that points to another page or post on your website. This helps visitors navigate your website more effectively and also helps spread link juice (ranking power) throughout your website.
Consistency– If you’re running a blog, it’s absolutely crucial that you are posting at the very least once per week.
Google loves websites that are updated with fresh content on a consistent basis and this also gives you a much better chance to diversify your SEO efforts. Make sure you are always providing massive value and the rest will take care of itself.
Link Building To Strengthen Overall SEO Efforts
Now that you have all of your SEO Tags in place and a healthy amount of content on your website, you are ready to start link building.
Link building can be more of a tedious process, but if you want any chance to rank highly for any keywords, it’s essential that you focus on link building each and every month. Below highlights two of the most powerful strategies you can get started with as soon as today.
Citations– Citations are basically mentions of your business, website and address on other webpages like Google, My Business, Bing Places, Apple Maps etc. They are a key component in the ranking algorithms of Google and Bing. These can be set up manually or you can use platforms such as Vendasta to help automate the process.
Guest Blog Posts– One of the most underrated strategies to build high-quality backlinks for your blog or website is guest posting. The idea here is to research relevant websites or blogs in your niche and see if they are accepting guest posts. In return for your guest post, most of these websites will allow you to add a “dofollow” link in your article which points back to your site. It’s crucial that you focus on quality rather than quantity when it comes to link building. Meaning that make sure the websites that you guest post on have a loyal following and a Domain Authority of at least 15 and over.
If you can utilize the 3 simple steps highlighted above, then you will be ahead of 99% of the competition. The majority of people do not even know these strategies exist which puts us at a major advantage when it comes to ranking in the search engines.
Now it’s important that you give the whole SEO process time to work. This is a long-term approach that will take time to build upon. Be consistent, be patient, be tactful and never give up!
